Looking at modern art through the lens of different themes can reveal connections between works of art and what we already know. In the video playlist, Modern Art & Ideas, we explore four themes that our educators frequently use when teaching at MoMA: Places & Spaces, Art & Identity, Transforming Everyday Objects, and Art & Society. Themes provide visitors with multiple entry points for exploring and understanding works of art. In this playlist, we look at 12 artworks from MoMA’s collection, including The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh, Gold Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol, Self-Portrait with Cropped Hair by Frida Kahlo, and more.

At MoMA, we produce short films to help our audience encounter the influential images and works that might change their lives. Our narratives are frequently artist-led and focus on artist process, motivation and inspiration. We’re particularly interested in telling stories about artists’ search for the human and universal truths that inspire us all to keep looking, questioning, and making.

This series was produced with our YouTube viewers as the primary audience. 35% of MoMA’s YouTube audience is 18-34 years old. They’re passionate, sometimes skeptical, always curious, and interested in thematic connections and context. The playlist was also used as introductory material in a professional development course for teachers on Coursera.
