We know that digital platforms can help museums scale up public programs, reaching a larger audience online than is possible in person. But what about the quality of the interaction? Can social media encourage close looking and spark creative response in ways that approximate the in-gallery experience? How can museums move past using Twitter as a megaphone to craft meaningful, participatory digital experiences? A museum educator at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. reflects on experiments with live tweeting an in-gallery sketching program to over 100,000 followers.
